Hello all!

I'm making my first forays into historical naval wargames, thanks to my enjoyment of both Dystopian Wars and World of Warships, as well as being a huge history nerd)

I currently have some 1/2400 scale ships on their way to me with which I play to try out some rules and scenarios (specifically, the hunting of the Bismark)

But I am at a bit of a loss as to how to base my ships. How do you base your ships? What materials do you use?

Basing ships is something I've only done a very little bit of. The few 1/2400 scale ships I've based were on rectangles of styrene that I cut out of sheet stock, and that worked well enough. I've also heard of folks having success with mounting smaller ships like DDs and CLs on the large "tounge depressor" sized craft sticks, cut to length. A good guy to talk to about this would be Ken, the Yarkshire Gamer. He has done an extensive amount of 1/2400 modeling, including the entire British and German orders fro, the Battle of Jutland.
